How to fix abnormal noise of leaf spring?

2026-06-04

1. Check and tighten loose U-bolts

Loose U-clamps are the most common cause of rattling noise. Retighten all U-bolt nuts evenly with torque wrench to fix spring displacement and collision noise.

2. Replace worn rubber spring bushings

Aging, cracked or missing bushings lead to metal-to-metal friction and squeaking. Install new standard bushing to eliminate direct contact between spring and hanger.

3. Clean and lubricate leaf contact surfaces

Dust, sand and rust between spring leaves create grinding noise. Clean impurities and apply special spring grease between each leaf for smooth sliding.

4. Inspect broken or deformed leaf spring

Cracked, bent or sagged spring pieces bump during driving. Replace damaged leaf or whole leaf spring assembly if deformation is serious.

5. Check shackle and hanger wear

Worn suspension shackle pins cause clearance and knocking noise. Change damaged pins and shackles to remove excessive gap.

Tip

If noise still exists after above maintenance, wrong specification leaf spring may be installed; choose matched standard leaf spring from manufacturer.
