How to choose the right leaf spring for semi-trailer?

2026-06-16

Leaf springs are the core load-bearing and shock-absorbing components of semi-trailer suspension systems.Improper selection will lead to frequent spring breakage, uneven tire wear, trailer body tilting, shortened axle service life and even traffic safety hazards. When purchasing and matching leaf springs for semi-trailers,buyers need to comprehensively evaluate axle load, structural style, dimensional parameters, production materials and actual transportation working conditions to pick the most suitable product.

First, confirm the rated axle load of the semi-trailer,which is the primary basis for leaf spring selection.Semi-trailers have diverse tonnage classifications including 13-ton,16-ton,20-ton and 25-ton axles. Each axle corresponds to a matched leaf spring load grade. For standard container transport semi-trailers with 13-ton axles,medium-load multi-leaf springs with 3–4 steel plates are sufficient. For coal transport, sand haulage and mining semi-trailers that run fully loaded every day,16-ton or higher heavy-duty leaf spring assemblies with 5–7 thickened leaves are required. If a low-load spring is installed on a heavy-duty axle, the spring arch will flatten rapidly under long-term overload, triggering metal fatigue cracks and sudden fracture during driving.

Second, distinguish two mainstream structural types:multi-leaf leaf springs and parabolic leaf springs.Conventional multi-leaf springs are stacked with multiple thin steel sheets, featuring strong rigidity, excellent overload resistance and low maintenance cost. They are widely favored by bulk cargo and mining semi-trailer fleets.Parabolic leaf springs adopt 1 to 2 tapered thick steel plates, which reduce the overall weight of the suspension by nearly 30%.Their soft elastic performance brings smoother driving on highways, effectively lowering tire wear and fuel consumption, making them ideal for long-distance express logistics semi-trailers.The two structures cannot be arbitrarily interchanged;mixing them will cause inconsistent left-right suspension stiffness and serious trailer shaking.

Third, measure and verify complete dimensional parameters to guarantee smooth installation.Key size indicators include the total effective length(center of front eye to center of rear shackle hole),steel plate width, single leaf thickness, arch height, bushing inner diameter and number of leaves. The mainstream width of semi-trailer leaf springs is 90mm and 100mm.Under the same load standard, thicker steel plates deliver stronger anti-fatigue performance. The arch height directly determines the ground clearance of the semi-trailer.Too low arch height will make the chassis scrape the ground when passing speed bumps, while excessive arch height raises the gravity center and reduces driving stability. It is recommended to take the original leaf spring as a reference for all dimension data to avoid mismatched mounting holes.

Fourth, check raw material and heat treatment processes to judge service life.High-quality semi-trailer leaf springs use 60Si2Mn alloy spring steel with stable tensile strength. After integral quenching, tempering and shot peening treatment, tiny compressive stress layers form on the steel surface, greatly slowing down crack expansion.Inferior springs adopt ordinary carbon steel without complete shot peening, prone to rust and breakage within a short service cycle.Surface anti-corrosion treatment also matters;electrostatic spraying or hot-dip galvanizing can resist mud, rain and road salt erosion for long-term outdoor operation.

Fifth, match working road conditions to adjust configuration. If the semi-trailer mainly travels on flat expressways, standard parabolic leaf springs balance economy and comfort. For frequent mountain roads, bumpy rural roads and mining yards, users should select thickened multi-leaf springs with reinforced end lugs to resist continuous impact loads. In addition,if the semi-trailer often bears uneven partial loads,a set of reinforced auxiliary leaf springs can be added to enhance lateral bearing balance.

In conclusion, the correct selection logic for semi-trailer leaf springs follows five steps:clarify axle tonnage and daily transport load, select multi-leaf or parabolic structure according to road conditions, record full dimensional data of the original spring, verify alloy steel material and complete heat treatment technology, and adjust reinforcement configuration based on complex operation scenarios.Following this standard can effectively extend suspension service life, cut fleet maintenance costs and guarantee stable and safe operation of the semi-trailer.
